Commissions
In the age of high technology, mass production and computer control we pride ourselves in continuing to use traditional cabinet making hand skills and tools to make the finest furniture.
Having a piece of bespoke furniture made is an exciting and a truly rewarding process. Within the constraints of what a piece of wood can be made to do, (which is probably more that you would think possible), and the types and colours of wood that are available, (of which there are a staggering number), the world is your oyster!
“Bespoke” might just be furniture of specific dimensions that will sit comfortably with an existing furniture style, with wood and colour matched carefully to blend seamlessly. Equally, “Bespoke” might be a chance to create something rather more contemporary using up to date techniques and a combination of materials to make a special centrepiece, or anything in between. Our style could perhaps be referred to as “Classically Modern” and we are naturally drawn to the Ludwig Mies van der Rohe design philosophy of “less is more”, generally keeping lines clean and simple. We generally like to use native or European timbers as these are nicer to work with from a health point of view and they don’t have to be hauled half way across the world, making them a much “greener” and cheaper option. Highly figured veneers can also be used to dramatic effect.
A Pair of Matching Side Tables
The inspiration for this elegant pair of side or bedside tables has been taken from the graceful tapered legs of Sheraton and the clean, unfussy clean lines of Biedermeier furniture.
London Plane has been quarter sawn to produce Lacewood showing very pretty figuring and combined with veneered panels of fumed figured Pear Wood which wrap around the table for dramatic contrast. The handleless drawers are lined in Cedar of Lebanon. The tables have been hand polished with Shellac and bought to a deep waxed finish.
Similar tables may be commissioned, separately or as a pair, with variations in design and dimensions to suit the client.
Furniture Copying
We specialise in making accurate copies of pieces of furniture, perhaps to make up a set of chairs or a pair of cabinets or tables. A set of antique chairs which is complete will have a much greater value than a part set, even if it includes copies, and matching pairs of tables, perhaps for the bedside, can be very difficult to find.
Finishing techniques used in the restoration of furniture can be employed to convincingly blend new copies with the originals. Copies may be made from existing pieces or from good quality photographs.
John Lloyd Range
Due to recent demand we are developing a range of distinctive contemporary coffee tables and side tables which will also extend to dining furniture and bedside cabinets.
These pieces are based on a range of standard designs. As each piece is made to order, it can be made to specific dimensions and with individual detailing, making each piece an original.
Each piece is made to the same exacting standards as our bespoke furniture but because the basic designs are already in place we can offer hand made furniture at much more competitive prices.
As an example of work, the Masur Range is an elegant collection of furniture combining curved stretchers, fine ebony line inlay and a contrasting veneer panel of Masur Birch in the top surface. The Masur range of furniture is available in either pale English Sycamore or Cherry. Side tables with elegant tapered legs, curved front stretcher & single long drawer, with ebony diamond escutcheon.
Painstaking attention to detail and careful selection of timber and veneers are the essential ingredients for all our furniture, whether it be a contemporary design or a copy of a fine antique.
Pieces are assembled using traditional joints such as mortices and tenons, and all dovetails for drawer and carcass work are cut by hand.
All items are finished by hand using natural shellac, oil and wax polishes.
