Cross-grain mouldings were one of those fashion things that happened to walnut furniture made in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Standard long-grain mouldings have been used since the days of early oak furniture, one of their benefits being that long lengths can be run quickly on the edge of a board; the length of the moulding is restricted purely by the length of the timber that it’s being run on.
