Caning became very fashionable in England for chair seats and backs in the middle of the 17th Century and continued to be used to a greater or lesser degree from then on. Cane will deteriorate over time and it is quite normal to re cane furniture. New cane can be coloured to blend with original, perhaps in a set of chairs.
