Veneering
Thin decorative layers of wood or “veneers”, have been used in furniture making for hundreds of years. Originally “saw-cut” but these days usually cut with a knife, which reduces waste. Over the years we have built up a stock of original saw-cut and modern knife-cut veneers, we also saw-cut our own veneers when necessary to match thickness and grain pattern, making it relatively simple to match original antique surfaces when veneers have gone astray. Traditional hand skills are employed to re-lay veneers, using hide glue and veneer hammers, cauls and hot sandbags.
